How our coins are made

From a first sketch to a pocketful of treasure. Join Muck and his dragon companion for a quick tour of how our metal coins come to life.

A little workshop magic: Muck and the dragon illustrate the process, rather than the actual factory equipment.

  1. Design the coin

    Every coin starts with an idea. The artwork takes shape, with details designed to read clearly at miniature scale.

  2. Create the steel mould

    The design is turned into a steel mould. Its recessed detail gives each cast coin its shape and character.

  3. Prepare the zinc alloy

    Zinc alloy is heated until molten, ready to flow into the mould and capture the design.

  4. Die cast the coin

    The molten alloy is injected into the mould under pressure, forming the coin and its fine details.

  5. Let it cool

    The metal cools and solidifies inside the mould so the coin holds its new shape.

  6. Release the coin

    The mould opens and the solid coin is ejected, ready for the finishing stages.

  7. Trim and deburr

    Excess metal from casting is removed, and rough edges are tidied up.

  8. Smooth the surface

    The coins tumble with finishing media to smooth their surfaces and prepare them for plating.

  9. Add the finish

    Plating gives the coins their chosen metallic finish, bringing the design one step closer to the tabletop.

  10. Dry the coins

    After finishing, the coins are dried before moving on to inspection.

  11. Check the details

    The coins are checked for casting and finish defects before they are selected for packing.

  12. Pack for adventure

    The finished coins are counted and packed, ready for their next adventure at your gaming table.
